Isn't it Ironic?

Did you know:

There are exactly 40 days between my birthday and a highly commercialized holiday that I have had notorious bad luck with?

...isn't it ironic...

major surgery

have you ever noticed when you get sick, it's never really just ONE thing?
a cold can consist of a fever, stuffy/runny nose, sneezing, coughing, phlegm, chills...and being tired.  the stomach flu means a tummy ache, sometimes vomiting, frequent trips to the toilet, dehydration...and being tired.  whether its something as common as...well, the common cold, or as serious as diabetes, heart attack or cancer; the multiple-symptom trend indicates something is off kilter.

about 3 weeks ago, my 6 1/2 year old car, tyler, wasn't feeling too well. the turn signal stopped working.  ah well, it's happened before.  so i just resolved that i'd have to drive more carefully by planning ahead. but almost as randomly, tyler seemed to have a hard time accelerating when i stepped on the gas.  hmm, maybe it's time for an oil change.  but not many more days passed before a yellow TCS light started flashing SIMULTANEOUSLY with another yellow light that had an outline of an engine and the word "check" inside it. uh oh, this is new. this can't be good.

i did what any sensible girl would do when placed in such unfamiliar conditions. i called my car guy. thankfully this is a pro bono service--dad just tells me to carefully drive my car back after work...and let me tell you, it was the scariest 22-mile drive i've ever had to take. my rpm meter was bouncing wildly, the car wouldn't accelerate and before my foot touched the brake, it would jerk as if i did. it was official.  tyler was possessed.

after going to a honda dealership, the results were in: a faulty turn signal connector, dangerously thin brake pads to the point of warpage, an SRS signal malfunction (from when i placed a portable dvd player on top of the dash in the passenger seat a while back) but they saved the worst news for last...a simple flush of transmission fluid wouldn't cut it. the transmission needed to be removed. the damage? a whopping $6,000. my heart dropped and i didn't know what to do. but God showed grace because unbeknownst to my dad and me, we had an acura extended warranty that covered the SRS and transmission! puurrraise da lord!

so i took tyler into the acura dealership, hung out w/ his cousin ('07 rdx) and a week later...TADA! tyler is back and smooth as the day we took him home. whatta fighter~ that's why i named him tyler.

the end.

thank you, come again!

i'm starting an excruciating work week to get an impossible project done and not to mention that i am "encouraged" to take a day off (in the middle of the week!) to show my lackluster patriotism, which will only force me to get a 15-day (so i'm exaggerating, 15 is an arbitrary number really) workload done in 4 days.  but don't mind me, i'm really being quite dramatic.

but of course, in spite of all the dramatic talk...i had to take a break to post this because this is not slacking off but sharing of a truly brilliant publicity (after all, i am in PR) stunt for the upcoming simpsons movie.

what's my motivation?

i've lost my discipline to infuse physical activity into my life. once i have a routine going, i'm set...but i can't seem to get motivated to take that first step...hmm, what's my motivation?

sitting backwards

for as long as i could remember, whenever i took bart, i would always try to choose the seat that had my back facing the direction that i was heading.  i don't know why that was my preference.  i heard from someone a long time ago that the seat a person chooses on a train reflects one's perception of life:

if you like to choose a seat that faces forward, you are a forward thinker: you don't dwell on the past, you look to the future, a determined dreamer and leave the things that hinder you, behind you.

on the contrary, if you choose a seat that faces backwards, you spend a lot of time looking to the past, reflective, scared of change and analytical.

oddly enough, it seems that my life reflects more of a forward-facing sitter. it especially seems the case with my relationships. with each stage of life...elementary, jr high, high school, and even college...i'm able to move on, make new friends but i have such a hard time keeping in touch with the ones i've made in the previous stage.  i realized the vicious cycle when i briefly chatted w/ a college friend who moved this weekend to so cal for school.  in my defense, i haven't forgotten the friendships throughout my many stages to this point. in fact faces and memories float to the forefront of my memory on almost a daily basis. but that final follow through...

i'm so apologetic to all the people who've considered me their friend throughout the past 20 some years...i've had the privilege of having some amazing friends and they deserve better than me.

it is times like now on a quiet day not having to work with nothing to do that i realize how lucky i am to have the internet that can connect me with people no matter where they are. perhaps the initial brains of xanga, friendster and myspace were backward seat sitters that missed their friends from the past...
